Scandal!

The Flames can't even get their pro-athlete scandals right. And we all already knew Kipper smoked, anyway.

New tunes

I never listen to broadcast radio, even internet radio has gotten repetitive on me. OPB has gone to the dogs, I mean, dropping Performance Today? For yet another political call-in show? c'mon! All-classical KBPS has a couple of good programs, but most of the time it's gunk music, like the soundtrack to a '50s melodrama. Or Mozart (snooze). Sorry, by my tastes are a little more "experimental" than endless Chopin piano noodling. Howabout some Ockeghem? or Ligeti? Not bland enough for Portland?

So it was with great surprise that I happened upon Something Different on Sunday evenings on KMHD. Good downtempo, international sounds, new jazz... Also glad the archived shows are on-line, I probably won't remember to turn on the radio every week.

It got me thinking about the first radio show that ever blew my mind, and changed my musical preferences forever. It was "Under the Floorboards" on KGNU in Boulder. Very noize, very weird, stuff you'd never hear anywhere else. So I had to look it up, and sure enough Little Fyodor is still doing it, 25 years strong. Last week's archive shows are online, too!

My music library has been tasting a little stale lately, hopefully these good shows can help freshen it up. Isn't that what radio is for?
